Which comes first, losing weight to get healthy or getting healthy to lose weight?
Being overweight or obese is a symptom, not a root cause. Instead of focusing on just weight loss, the key is to work on getting healthy. When your body becomes healthy, weight loss will naturally follow. Conditions like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, stroke, and obesity are all signs of an unhealthy body. Obesity isn’t the cause, but rather a result of deeper health issues.
If you struggle to lose weight, it's often because your hormones are out of balance. You can't be both overweight and truly healthy at the same time. Your body won’t shed fat until it reaches a certain level of health. The reason your body holds on to fat is due to survival instincts. It won’t let go of fat until it’s no longer relying on sugar for energy. Sugar can come from your diet or be produced by stress, which triggers cortisol (the stress hormone). Cortisol can convert proteins in your body into sugar for fuel.
The real goal should be improving the health of your glands and hormones. Once you do that, weight loss will naturally happen as a result of a healthier body. Unfortunately, hormone imbalances often go unnoticed because many doctors rely heavily on blood tests, which only show major issues. Hormone and gland issues can exist long before they show up on a blood test.
For example, if your adrenal glands overproduce stress hormones, they can suppress growth hormone, which is key for burning fat. If you have a cyst on your ovary, excess estrogen can block your thyroid, causing symptoms like weight gain, hair loss, and brittle nails.
In short, excess fat is just a symptom, not the real cause. Many people are trying to fix the wrong problem, leading to frustration and lack of results. The real issue is that your fat cells are not releasing energy properly. To address this, it's important to understand the role and function of fat cells in your body.
